Dunkin' Donuts and Jersey Mike's Coming to Palatine

The Palatine Village Council unanimously approved the new development on Northwest Highway and Smith Street.

The Palatine Village Council unanimously approved a new project Monday which will include a Dunkin' Donuts and Jersey Mike's sub shop.

The 6,700 square foot project also will include two other retail spaces in a new construction at Northwest Highway near Smith Street.

During discussions leading up to the vote, concerns voiced by councilmen mirrored issues that caused the council to reject a previous plan for a Starbucks and a Charley's Grilled Subs restaurant

Main concerns then related to ingress and egress to the proposed new development at 205-207 W. Northwest Highway. A perceived increase in traffic at the already busy intersection also was highlighted as reason for pause on the project.

It was ultimately rejected 4-3 by the village council in January of 2012

The new plan was sized down 1,000 square feet from the previous plan. Developers also hired a traffic engineer to help map how drivers would navigate in and out of the area

The new building will be located on property surrounded by four businesses, including BMO Harris Bank, Fortune Kookie restaurant, McDonald's and Maaco.

The two other planned retail spots do not yet have tenants.

Before the vote was taken, District 3 Councilman Jim Clegg highlighted the fact that close to 40 jobs would be created by the two businesses alone.

"This opportunity is good for Palatine," Clegg said.

The Palatine Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved the project in mid-June.
