It's that time again, the annual pilgramige for sail boats from their winter dry dock to their summer homes on Lake Michigan. On selected Wednesdays and Saturdays in the spring, the City of Chicago conducts "Bridge Lifts" to accomodate these sailboats. I have lived in the Chicago area for most of my life and never witnessed one of these lifts, until this morning.
If you haven't seen one, it's worth the trip to see it. I started at Lake Street, and walked along the river towards the lake as they opened the bridges. Each bridge has it's own personality when it opens. The change in the landscape as bridges open to salute not only the boats drifting through, but the magnificent buildings that dot the Chicago skyline.
For more information on Chicago's loop bridges, as well as a bridge lift schedule, visit http://www.chicagoloopbridges.com/schedule.html Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to ride on one of the boats as they traverse the lake.
