Rivalry?

Bill talks about this weekend's Cubs - Sox game.

Rivalry is defined as "competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field". Only 5 World Seriese between them, they play in the different leagues,  you can hardley consider the Cubs and the White Sox rivals on the scale of Yankees-Red Sox, Packers-Bears or Red Wings - Blackhawks.

They met in the fall classic only once - 1906 - and the White Sox won 4-2. The Cubs have been to twice as many World Series (10) as the White Sox (5). The Cubs also have a better winning percentage in their history than the Sox.

Lovable Losers vs - well, just losers. The Cubs play in a quaint ballpark adored by baseball fans world wide (except on the south side of Chicago), although maybe not by as many players. The White Sox play in a stadium nicknamed for a place where criminals spend the night.

Harry Carey may have got his start in Chicago on the south side, but he became legendary when he went to the north side.  Rick Monday was a hero saving an American Flag from being burned by a couple of idiots, while 40,000 idiots were zeros at Comisky trying to burn the stadium down on Disco Demolition Night.

The Cubs had Lovable Lou, the White Sox had Ozzie being Ozzie. The Sox current manager is best know for getting his butt kicked by a much older Nolan Ryan after charging the mound.

The rivalry isn't really between the teams as it is between the fans of the teams. North Side-South Side. I grew up in a south suburb. My mom and dad took us to games at both parks during the years. My mom would gather us up, takes us to Wrigley where we would sit in the bleachers rooting on the Cubs in 1969. My brother John and I have become lifelong Cubs fans. The other three, must have been dropped on their heads.

Enjoy the games at the most beautiful park in the nation this weekend folks. When we return the series to "The Cell" in June be assured the Cub fans will look down upon your stadium just as we do your team. Because neither team will be playing in those stadiums in October. But I still bleed Cubbie Blue.
