'ROCK ON!': Palatine High Presents its Annual Variety Show

Palatine High School showcases its annual talent variety show in Altergott Auditorium April 28-30.

Palatine High School (PHS) showcases its annual Variety Show in the Altergott Auditorium Thursday, April 28 to Saturday, April 30. This year the event is entitled "ROCK ON!" and like Palatine High’s variety shows of years past, is expected to leave crowds entertained.

"ROCK ON!" consists of short talent acts including roughly 100 performers from Palatine High School. Ken Stromberg, a physical therapist at PHS who also serves as musical director of the event, said the variety show reflects a rich diversity flowing through Palatine High School’s student population.

“There’s something for everyone in this highly entertaining show that boasts talent and performances with a professional look and feel; [the show] will make you forget that you are in a high school auditorium,” Stromberg said.

Talent acts run the gamut from ballet, pop and interpretive dance to comedy, musical bands, vocal solos and even “Shakespearean rap.” These artistic skits are created primarily by the students, but backed by the guidance of faculty participants. Interested talents auditioned in March, and have been working hard with directors to perfect their performances.

Other notable elements of PHS’s upcoming variety show include vocal duets and groups spanning country, acapella, jazz, blues and rock. Dance segments also will feature jazz, hip-hop and salsa styles for movement.

Since the variety show’s inception four years ago, Palatine High implemented a professional production company to enhance the event’s impact on audiences. The new partnership resulted in polished lighting and sound designs for the show.

According to "ROCK ON!"s co-director Deanna Wright, PHS’s decision to work with professionals successfully improved the show’s dynamic.

“We’ve been selling out the last two years,” Wright said.

Wright, in her second year directing the show, said she appreciates the manner in which "ROCK ON!" has incited personal connections.

“I love the contact with the student body,” Wright said. “[The variety show is] a representation of the entire school; it’s neat to see the mix of kids come together.”

"ROCK ON!" is performed at 7:30 p.m. April 28 to April 30 in Altergott Auditorium, 1111 N. Rohlwing Rd. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. General admission tickets are available for purchase at the event.
