The Northwest Symphony Orchestra will present the third concert of its 60th season on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 3:30 PM in the Maine West High School Theatre for the Performing Arts.  Music Director and Conductor Paul Vermel will lead the orchestra in a program entitled “National Romanticism,” which will feature two complete symphonies, emphasizing exciting geographical and temporal contrasts.

The orchestra opens with British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’ 1943 Symphony No. 5 in D

Major, a symphony characterized by its moving portrayal of ultimate and fundamental peace. The concert concludes with a one of the most beloved pieces of the orchestral symphonic literature, Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95, “From the New World.” From its musical nod to American folk music to the evocative “Goin’ Home” theme in the second movement, the 1893 symphony presents a special blend of the composer’s national musical interests, both American and Czechoslovakian.

A pre-concert commentary will be presented by Carolyn Paulin at 2:30 pm in room A-201, adjacent to the Theatre. Ms. Paulin is a producer and program host at radio station WFMT 98.7 Chicago.

Concert ticket prices are $20.00 for adults, $15.00 for seniors age 65 and over, and $10.00 for students.  Children under age 14 are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets are available at the door on the day of the concert, or may be ordered in advance on the orchestra’s web site, www.northwestsymphony.org.   Payment may be made by PayPal or credit card.  Maine West High School is located at the intersection of Wolf Rd and Oakton Ave. in DesPlaines, and ample free parking is available in the school parking lots.  The building is handicap accessible.

As part of its gala 60th anniversary season, the orchestra is hosting a fundraiser on March 24, from 2:00 PM TO 5:00 PM at the “Place de la Musique”, on the SanFilippo estate in Barrington Hills, where you will have a chance to tour the 44,000 square foot private residence and you will see and hear the magnificent collection of beautifully restored antique music machines, the world’s largest restored 8000-pipe theatre organ, chandeliers, art glass and other functional mechanical antiques.  In addition, this year the event will include a visit to the unique Carousel Pavilion.  At 3:00 P.M., world-renowned theatre organist Jelani Eddington will present a 60 minute performance showcasing the exceptional dynamic range and orchestral capabilities of the 1927 Wurlitzer organ.   The “Place de la Musique” is only open to the public for events such as this, and the  number of tickets is limited. Tickets must be ordered in advance from the Northwest Symphony Orchestra and are only $50.  Orders may be mailed to the Northwest Symphony Orchestra, PO Box 46, Mt. Prospect, IL  60056-0046, or ordered on the orchestra website.  No tickets will be sold at the estate.  For further information, contact the orchestra at 847-965-7271, or check out their website at www.northwestsymphony.org.
