Palatine's Wellness Place Offers Free Cancer Education Programs

The Wellness Place will present free cancer education program for September and October.

Wellness Place will present free health education programs that are open to the public in September and October.

Residents can register by calling (847) 221-2400. Registration is required.

  • Mindful Living and Meditation Skills is presented on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. by Sandra Cotting, RN, MS, RMT. Practicing the art of paying attention, or mindfulness, in everyday life is a simple yet powerful tool which can help in dealing with life’s challenges. Cultivating moment to moment awareness via mindful living encourages relaxation and mental clarity which can help reduce daily stress and empower people to feel less reactive and more in control of their choices. This workshop will include gentle stretching along with the practice of two new meditation techniques. Please dress comfortably and bring a large towel or mat. Class size is limited.
  • Radiation and Chemoradiation: How Working Together Can Improve Cancer Outcomes for Patients, Thursday, Sept. 29 from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. This program is presented by Ramji Rajendran, MD, PhD, Oncologist/Radiation Therapy of Alexian Brothers Health Systems and Radiation Oncology Consultants. Patients often wonder whether their doctors are talking to each other and are on the same page. Oncology is a unique field in which radiation oncologists work with surgeons and medical oncologists to treat different cancers. Dr. Rajendran will discuss how certain stages of cancer can be treated with radiation alone and others are treated with radiation along with chemotherapy. The primary focus will be on lung, gastrointestinal, head and neck cancers. There will be time for questions as well as open discussion. Registration deadline is Sept. 22.
  • Dr. Michael Kinney, Surgical Director of Northwest Community Hospital Comprehensive Breast Center presents: Surveillance after a Breast Cancer Diagnosis on Thursday, Oct. 6 from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. Join us as Dr. Kinney discusses the importance of surveillance after a breast cancer diagnosis. He will speak about post surgical follow up and diagnostic techniques including but not limited to, manual exams, imaging, PEM scans, Aromatase inhibitors, Tamoxifen, scar tissue and recurrent pain syndrome. Registration deadline is Oct. 4.

Wellness Place, cancer education and support is a community-based cancer resource center in Palatine, serving those diagnosed with cancer and their family, friends and caregivers.

They provide critical, life-enhancing support and guidance as people learn to manage emotional and physical responses, sort through treatment options and side effects, formulate questions for doctors and communicate matters to others.
