Palatine Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday

Michi Shingu celebrated her 100th year on Thursday, November 1. She attended a recent family party where her long life was honored by all who were there.

Michi Shingu, a resident of Palatine’s Tamarack Retirement Home, recently celebrated her 100th Birthday on Nov 1, 20012.  A party was given by her daughters, Shirley (Bob) Benos of Palatine and Barb Shingu of California.  

In attendance was her entire family, including granddaughter Kim (Kevin) Kilmer, her grandson Nick (Brandy) Benos and great-grandchildren, Charlie, Nicky, and Oliver.  In addition, many of her friends and neighbors stopped over to pass along their good wishes.

Michi has enjoyed over ten decades of life, and each has been filled with historical events and personal milestones.

She was born in San Francisco, Ca. in 1912 and married George Shingu in 1937. Despite being a U.S. citizen, she and her entire family were relocated from California during WWII to a Japanese Internment Camp in Utah (Topaz).  After four years in camp, the family traveled by rail to Webster Groves, MO where Michi lived for more than 50 years.  

She retired from the YMCA as a Secretary and subsequently moved to the Chicago area and eventually to Tamarack where she has resided for the past 10 years.
