Fans from grades 5 and up are invited to work up their appetites by playing games, competing in a costume contest, and putting their knowledge of the series to the test. Tickets are available to valid District cardholders at the Main Library Reader Assistance Desk.

“Fan fests are an opportunity to bring books to life,” says librarian Tracie Amirante, who is helping to coordinate the event. “This series offers us a unique chance to share our excitement with a broad range of readers, including tweens, teens, and adults.”

The series is set in a dystopic future America known as Panem, which has been divided into thirteen districts. Each year, the government of Panem asserts its authority over its citizens by hosting a televised “game” in which teen representatives from each district must fight one another to the death. The series follows 16-year-old Katniss, who volunteers to take the place of her younger sister in the arena, and finds herself falling in love with one of her competitors, a teen boy named Peeta. “This series raises important questions about freedom, loyalty, love, and family,” Amirante adds.

The Fan Fest at the Library is being billed as a “Hunger Games Training Camp” during which attendees can enjoy refreshments from “Peeta’s Bakery” and hone their skills in archery, knot-tying, costume design, and more. Special prizes, including movie posters, will be awarded.
