Flood Warning Issued for Des Plaines River

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Des Plaines River near Des Plaines for late Wednesday night through Friday afternoon.

Heavy rainfall of between two to three inches fell over portions of the upper Des Plaines river water shed causing rises on the river and tributaries, according to the NWS Chicago.

As of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, the river was at 1.9 feet. Flood stage is 5 feet and the river is expected to reach 5.6 feet by Thursday afternoon.

"At 5.5 feet, water reaches some backyard along Big Bend Drive," according to the NWS.

The heavy rain caused flooded streets in the northern suburbs Wednesday morning, according to the Daily Herald. Southbound Milwaukee Avenue north of Route 60 in Libertyville was down to one lane Wednesday while Sunset Road near Delany Road in Gurnee was closed, the Daily Herald reports.

The National Weather Service reminds motorists to turn around or find an alternate route if they come upon a flooded roadway.
