Attorney General: Check Sex Offender Registry Before Trick-or-Treat

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is asking that parents ensure their children have a safe Halloween by checking the sex offender registry to plan out where children will trick-or-treat.

The Illinois Sex Offender Registry is a tool parents should use as they plan out where their children will trick-or-treat this Halloween, according to Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Illinois law prohibits sex offenders who are on parole or mandatory supervised release or probation from giving out candy to children for the holiday.

“We conduct compliance checks to verify that offenders actually live where they claim to so we can ensure the registry continues to serve as a useful tool for parents,” Madigan said. “I encourage families to check the registry before they head out on Halloween to help them plan safe trick-or-treating routes for their kids.”
