Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Friday (March 2) is Dr. Seuss' birthday. Can you believe that 108 years ago, Theodore Geisel changed the world by teaching children to read, and enjoy it, when he introduced “The Cat in the Hat?”

I want to honor his memory and thank him for entertaining and educating us and our children. He has stimulated our imaginations and engaged us with fun, humor and a whole lot of goofiness. To keep his memory alive and have fun with the kids, here are 6 ways to help celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday this weekend.

1. Read. He wrote more than 40 books, so pick your favorites and spend some time in the wacky world he created. My favorites are The Lorax, Green Eggs and Ham, Fox in Sox, and One Fish, Two Fish. Don't have any of your own Dr. Seuss books? Grab some at the library!

2. Download an App. Are your kids too into technology to read a book made of ...gasp, paper? Check out Oceanhouse Media's interactive Dr. Seuss books. While I love books and encourage my kids to read all the time, Dr. Seuss stories just beg to be animated and enhanced which is why I love these interactive stories. I download a few to my Android phone and I've got entertainment for the kids anytime we are waiting in a restaurant or doctor's office. (OK, I read them when I'm by myself, too.)

3. Take a Trip to Seussville. This fun website is dedicated to all things Seuss. You and your kids can play games, meet the wacky characters and learn more about the author.

4. Cook up some Dr. Seuss inspired food. Michelle over at the So Wonderful, So Marvelous blog hosted a very clever Dr. Seuss birthday party for her kids and I loved her food ideas. Head on over to her site to see how she made the Pink Ink Yink Drink {pink lemonade}, ABCs of Seuss Cookies {frosted cookies with ABCs on them}, and Yertle's Caramel Turtles {Rolo turtle candies}.

5. Conserve. I love the Lorax. He's my absolute favorite book character, ever. Now you can use the Lorax to help teach your kids about being environmentally friendly. See these Tips from the Lorax on how to make little differences that save the planet.  Your kids can also get more involved with the Lorax Project website. Of course, The Lorax movie comes out on this Friday, on Dr. Seuss' birthday. You can see a trailer of the movie here

6. Play. You'll find quite a few Dr. Seuss games and crafts online and especially on Pinterest. Some of the cutest ones I've seen are the Lorax Puppet Theater and Building Your Own Crazy Seuss City.

Which is your favorite Dr. Seuss character or book?

Great column, Sue. I'm a big fan of Green Eggs. My only complaint: does anyone edit these columns? March 2nd? We don't allow that in our second-grade class.

Thanks for the terrific column, Sue. I'm taking a graduate level Children's Materials class at the University of Wisconsin -- Milwaukee's School of Information Science program, and I posted your column to our discussion boards. Theodor Geisel was truly a pioneer in writing beginning readers for children ("The Cat in the Hat," published in 1957, has a vocabulary of only 236 words) and his vibrant and imaginative work continues to delight us today. I really appreciate your great suggestions on how to celebrate his memory!

Thank you Mary Ann for posting my column! I'm so glad you liked it enough to share. I didn't know that "The Cat in the Hat" only has a vocabulary of 236 words. I was sad the other day when my daughter said some teachers at school wouldn't let the kids read Dr. Seuss books because he uses too many imaginary words. How sad that they don't see the magic.

Mary Jo - Thanks for your comment and for sharing your favorite Dr. Seuss book. Green Eggs and Ham is a classic.
