Sanborn Students Have Heart at the Palatine Library

It’s easy to see that the students at Sanborn School have heart when it comes to
creating fabulous works of art. 

Mrs. Joanna Angelopoulos, the art teacher at Sanborn, came up with the idea to teach a lesson focused on the works of Jim Dine, an American pop artist who uses colorful hearts as his main subject. Joanna thought it would be great to have the students copy his style in a 2-D piece and then to create a 3-D sculpture of their image to display. She also asked the students to write something that they do to show love. The resulting final pieces were astonishing, with phrases like, “love is hugging my mom” and “love is being gentle to animals”. 

Mrs. Angelopoulos reached out to the Palatine Library to create a family program
that took place on Wednesday, February 13. Families were invited to come hear a
story called “The Day It Rained Hearts,” create their own valentines to take home,
and even had their picture taken in a scene where it was “raining hearts.” What
a fabulous way to spend the night before Valentine’s Day! And the best part was
that the second graders who created all these pieces were able to show them off
to their families in an art gallery style viewing at the Palatine Library where
they could mingle and enjoy refreshments with other classmates. 

The event was open to the public and many were able to see the hard work of Joanna and her students.
