Woman Hit By Car In Palatine

A woman was hit by a car Saturday night and taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

UPDATED: Police Investigate Safety At Intersection

A woman police described as elderly was hit by a car Saturday, Nov. 5 at approximately 7:15 p.m. as she crossed the intersection of Northwest Highway and Benton Street.

She was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where she remains. Her condition has not been released by fire department officials.

Palatine Police Sgt. Tim Sharkey said investigators have concluded alcohol was not a factor in the incident. The driver has not been cited in the crash.

The Palatine resident was crossing Northwest Highway at Benton Street when she was hit by the sedan, Sharkey said.

The driver, whose name is not being released by police, was travelling westbound at the time of the incident.

Sharkey said it was pitch dark at the time of the accident, which may have been a factor.

This is the same intersection that Aida Guss was struck and killed last year. Was the timing of the traffic signal checked to see if the "walk" signal allowed enough time for someone to cross the road?

"Walk" signal does NOT seem to be any longer! Why don't we have a video camera at that light? Still too many accidents and I have personally seen cars speed through the yellow/red light many of times!!

This intersection is popular for pedestrian traffic and is poorly lit. The village should do something about making it better for the cyclists and pedestrians sooner rather than later before there is another victim.
