Palatine resident Marie Thurston was honored for her role in saving a woman who fell through the ice at Hamilton Reservoir on Jan. 21.

Thurston heard a woman yelling for help, called 911 and stayed on the phone with 911 to pass along important information. Police also said that Thurston was in contact with the woman, encouraging her to hold on until help arrived.

Palatine Mayor Jim Schwantz presented Thurston with the honor during Monday's Village Council meeting. Also recognized were four Palatine Police officers – David Branwein, Angelo Calanca, Peter Dawson and Kevin Freese – who arrived on the scene.

The officers went onto the thin ice, crawling on their stomachs and rescued the victim by pulling her out of the water.

The reservoir is located at 1037 N. Smith St. Police said that at the time most of the reservoir was frozen, but there was an open area of water in the middle. Police said the woman's dog fell in the water and the woman went to help it. The dog was out of the water when police arrived.

Being calm enough to give the 911 operators accurate location info on a cell phone call is no small feat in itself!
