Realtors Join Forces with D211 Foundation to Fight Homelessness

On Thursday, November 1, a fundraiser will be held to raise money for teens who attend D211 schools and are classified as homeless. The 2011 inaugural event raised more than $13,000.

REALTORs Against Homelessness (RAH) are again teaming up with the District 211 Foundation to assist the growing number of students attending D211 schools who are homeless.

The second annual fundraiser will be held at John Barleycorn, Schaumburg, to help purchase school supplies, grocery cards, clothing and other needs that these students have due to their current situation.

Homelessness is classified, per federal law, as lacking a regular and adequate nighttime residence, having to share housing with others due to the loss of a residence, or what is called an 'unaccompanied youth', which includes students who are not able to live at home and are forced to find housing elsewhere.

"A growing number of students go to school without a regular, stable place to live or to sleep each night. For many of these students, school is the one place where they can receive regular, nutritious meals, enjoy opportunities and activities with their friends and free themselves from worries that await them once the school day ends," according to information on the District 211 Foundation website.

To support these kids, a large group of area realtors decided to band together and do something about the issue.

"As REALTORs, we commit ourselves to securing people with a stable and enriching sense of "home". We fully understand the importance of a home environment for nurturing the development of young people. Our goal is to do all that we can to support these students," the D211 website states.

The first fundraiser was held in November of 2011 and organized by ten founding members of RAH, who were able to raise more than $13,000.

The second annual fundraiser will be held Thursday, November 1 from 4:30 p.m until 7:30 p.m. at John Barleycorn, 1100 American Lane, Schaumburg.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by clicking realtorsagainsthomelessness.com/event-tickets
