Palatine Lowers Speed Limit on Portion of Colfax Street

Palatine recently reviewed the speed limits for all of Colfax Street under village jurisdiction after a concerned citizen pointed out an inconsistency on the limits posted.

Pay close attention to the speed limit posted on Colfax Street, as it is about to change.

At the May 21 village council meeting, Reid Ottesen, village manager, said that a resident contacted the village concerning whether the posted speed limit on Colfax Street, between Brockway and Smith Streets, should be reduced from 35 mph to 30 mph, as it is east of Brockway Street.

Currently the speed limit on Colfax Street, west of Brockway Street to Stephen Drive, is 35 mph and increases to 40 mph west of Stephen Drive. Ottesen said these speed limits date back to when all of Colfax Street was an unmarked state highway.

Palatine reviewed the speed limits for all of Colfax Street under village jurisdiction and recommended changes to the posted speed limits on Colfax Street. The council unanimously approved changing the posted speed for both directions on Colfax Street to the following:

  • Colfax Street from Northwest Highway to Smith Street to 30 mph.
  • Colfax Street from Smith Street to Quentin Road to 35 mph.

(Corrected) Excellent news. Now maybe the police officers of Palatine will start obeying traffic laws themselves. Oh wait, that's not going to happen ... and if you dare say anything about it, you'll hear that the only times they speed, weave in traffic, drive on soft medians, change lanes in intersections, etc. is when they're on silent, emergency calls. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

I haven't had any run-ins with Palatine's finest since I moved here several years ago but so many people complain about them all the time, I'm starting to wonder whether they are actually a real problem.

About the speed limit thing, thanks for the update! I will be sure to keep an eye on the signs when I go through there.
