Palatine Looks to Change Up Street Fest for Young People

The village of Palatine will consider adding new activities to better engage young people ages 16-20 during Palatine Street Fest 2013.

In addition to approving the many details to allow planning for Palatine Street Fest 2013 to move forward, the Village of Palatine will consider the possibility of adding new activities and entertainment for attendees 16 to 20 years of age for this year's event.

According to a village memo on the proposition, this age group tends to ‘congregate’ on the west side of the Street Fest parameters, and ideas on how to provide more events aimed at drawing them in have been explored over the last several years.

The possibilities include adding a second and smaller stage in Lot 14, according to the memo, which is located north of Towne Square.

The new features could include live bands and local entertainment during the day, and a DJ and dance music in the evenings from Friday, August 23 through Sunday August 25 when Street Fest is planned, the memo states.

Operation and security issues, as well as funding for the proposal will be further explored before final consideration and approval is given by the village council.

The estimated cost for the stage, equipment and talent is $10,000.

Details the village council will consider at the Monday, January 7 meeting will include authorization of contracts, temporary closure of commuter lots and public streets and sound amplification waivers during musical entertainment.

The Village of Palatine began Street Fest in 2000. It showcases local restaurants, provides live entertainment and wide range of activities ove the three day fest.

How about having teams preregister to participate in a series of contests, like a scavenger hunt, dance-off, kareoke, water ballon toss, potato sack/wheelbarrow race?

Maybe hire a DJ instead of a band...or a battle-of-the-bands!

How about a dance-off or kareoke? Or daytime activities like wheelbarrow, potato sack races, bags, etc. Kids should pre-register as a team and possibly even pay a small fee to enter. As far as music goes, probably just a DJ...or maybe a battle-of-the-bands.
