Nancy L. Meccia, 54

Services have been scheduled for Inverness resident Nancy L. Meccia.

Nancy L. Meccia, nee Kalachnik, 54, of Inverness, passed away peacefully in her home, June 14, after a valiant battle against cancer.

She was surrounded by her loving family: Sam, husband of 32 years, and her children, Joe and Samantha. A long-time employee of the Chicago Tribune and, later, a stay-at-home mom, Nancy was a vital, outspoken woman, who journeyed through her illness with strength, dignity and grace. Her wicked sense of humor and enjoyment of a good gathering of friends and family were matched only by her passion for cooking.

Nancy leaves behind a brother, Paul, and a host of relatives and friends to whom she was fiercely devoted. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, 405 Lake Zurich Rd., Barrington, Illinois 60010. http://www.hospiceanswers.org

Visitation will be held Monday, June 18, 2012, 3-9 p.m.  Funeral Tuesday at 9:45 a.m. from Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Hwy., Palatine to St. Michael Episcopal Church, 647 Dundee Avenue, Barrington for a service at 10:30 AM.  Interment St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery.

Free of all pain, and loved by our Heavenly Father. I love you, and miss you already, but we will see you again on the other side sister. We will be here for your family always and forever.

My first memory of Nancy was driving in a car with Nancy and Sam when they were first dating, and hearing them sing in harmony One Way Or Another by Blondie. It was easy to see that my cousin was crazy about her. They sang " I'm gonna getcha getcha getcha with such vigor. He was a goner over this girl and it was easy to see. When Sam lost his Mom in 1990 (our matriarch) Nancy worked hard to fill the role. Our holidays were delivered with precision and perfection as only Sam's mom could have delivered. It was a tall order, but no challenge went unfulfilled. Nancy delivered every dish and sentiment with perfection and percision. She was amazing. An Italian through and through, even though she was not born to it. I doubt my cousin Sam could tell the difference. She was funny, expressive, and loved by all. And Sam, Sammi, and Joe, know that she will be in your hearts and your souls for all time as she will be in ours. May God comfort you and keep you during your time of grief. With much love and affection, Your cousin Tammy Spizzirri Callo
