Halloween Police Scare Near PHS

A 9-1-1 caller reported seeing a gun barrel in the window of a van at Northwest Highway and Rohlwing during Halloween trick-or-treating.

Parents and trick-or-treaters near the 500 block of Cunningham Drive on Halloween got a healthy scare as police officers had guns drawn after a report of a weapon seen in a van.

The 9-1-1 call came in just before 4 p.m. as trick-or-treating was in full swing.

Commander Kurt Schroeder with the Palatine Police Department said the caller reported seeing the barrel of a gun in the back window of a van driving near Northwest Highway and Rohlwing Road.

Police officers patrolling the area were able to locate the van based on the caller description in the 500 block of Cunningham Drive near Palatine High School

Schroeder said police conducted a felony stop on the van, which required everyone in the vehicle to exit. Since the situation was uncertain, guns were drawn to secure the area, Schroeder said.

Once all three occupants left the van, police checked the interior for weapons and additional occupants. None were located.
