Duckworth Bypasses Lottery for Office Space in Washington

Tammy Duckworth, the new 8th congressional district representative for Illinois, was allowed by the U.S. House Speaker to choose office space that would be most handicapped-accessible.

When you're newly elected in Washington D.C., there is a lottery system to determine where office space will be, but Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois) was allowed to bypass the system due to her need for a handicapped-accessible space, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Duckworth is a double amputee who lost her legs in Iraq in 2004 when the helicopter she was in was hit by a rocket-powered grenade.

The architect of the U.S. Capitol will be reconfiguring the first-floor office, according to the Chicago Tribune, so the space is as handicapped-accessible as possible for Duckworth.
