Cardinal George Says Same-Sex Marriage Is 'Against The Common Good,' Do You Agree?
Cardinal Francis George releases a strongly worded letter as the State Legislature moves closer to a vote on gay marriage.
As gay marriage moves closer to a vote in the Illinois General Assembly, Cardinal Francis George has released a letter attacking the notion of same- sex marriage itself and urging Catholics to voice their objections.
A full floor vote was delayed today, though an Illinois Senate Executive Committee did approve it, according to the Huffington Post. Despite the delay, proponents say the bill could still ultimately be approved.
Illinois would become the 10th state in the country to allow same-sex marriages.
In his letter, George argued that because same-sex marriages cannot be consummated and are not undertaken for the purpose of conceiving children that government, "has no power to create something that nature itself tells us is impossible."
He qualifies his argument by writing that the Catholic church offers support for the gay community through various ministries. George argues that opposition to the potential law is crucial because of societal acceptance same-sex marriage would gain if it is viewed as legal.
"Human dignity and human rights are then reduced to the whims of political majorities," he writes.
Supporters of same-sex marriage have long argued that legalization is a human rights issue and the restriction of marriage rights to heterosexual couples is its own form of discrimination.
The law would force no religious institutions to perform same-sex marriages.
Gay marriage has been gaining support nationally at a comparatively rapid rate in recent years. Recent polls have consistently indicated that over half of Americans support it. That number spikes to 72 percent of Americans between 18 and 29 years of age, according to a CBS News poll.

I think the church should stay out of politics or give up their tax excempt status.

I agree. The Church keeps jumping into issues like this and health care reform and they always seem to be on the side that does not benefit people. The government is and should promote freedom and equality for all. The church, within its own jurisdiction, has absolute power over their own faithful. This bill will not force churches to perform same sex marriage ceremonies and this is fair. The Church has the right to deny personal freedoms to its flock and excommunicate those that do not follow their teachings. The state is not getting involved in the church on this issue but the church and Cardinal are trying to impose their views on all other people in the state, including atheists.

Shouldn't the same be the case with all organizations that get exemption because of their charitable work or because they get funding from the Government?

Jerry, maybe the Church believes that opposition to same sex marriage is for the benefit of people. Remember that they are looking at this from God's perspective. I think the more permissive society becomes based on what can be scientifically possible the more we denigrate our society. Over the past 30-40 years we have developed an anything goes attitude. Along that same timeframe, we have seen tremendous declines in the sanctity of the family unit, respect for life, and common decency to each other in general. Perhaps the Church is trying to protect us from ourselves.

I think the government should stay out of religion and stop trying to force religious groups and citizens into paying for things that they are morally against. The pendullum swings both ways.

This is not forcing anything on the church. If they don't want to perform same sex marriages, they don't have to.

Mariage has been the standard for a man and a woman since the bible. Not that I am a religous person, but all faiths seem to agree that same sex marriage is wrong. Why should a small minority be given such a loud voice and make the rest of us have to live by government once again involving themselves into something that is not their concern. We as a country were founded on the principle that there is a separation between church and state, honestly other than for revenue I don't see why marriage licenses were ever the business of the state, that is for your church, temple, synagoge or mosque and the religious one in charge at that holy place. We keep allowing government to waste time debating such minor things like same sex marriage or gun control and not concentrate on the fiscal responsibility government has. Illinois is in deep trouble financially and rather than dealing with that they stick their noses into non important matters.

I could not have said it better. We need a Savior and also a savior for our country. Is it 2016 yet?

Actually all faiths don't agree. Here, why don't I name just a few of many Christian denominations that support monogamous same sex relationships: United Church of Christ, Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church, Unitarian Church, Unity Church, etc.
But all of that doesn't really matter anyway since we have separation of church and state in this country, so whether or not churches support or disapprove of something is not supposed to play a role in law making.
I'm not even going to get into your "minor" and "non-important" comments...

A government that can or should focus on only one item is recipe for failure. The gay marriage recognition stuff is more for the benefits derived from marriage, like health benefits, inheritance etc. Stuff that is squarely in the government's purview.
To Catherine's point : Those who are looking at others for saving themselves, will keep on looking.

Very well said. I wish our legislators would spend some time dealing with the issues that will have a negative affect on ALL OF US in the very near future-our financial mess and the pension crisis.

The government needs all the revenue it can get it's hands on. Why not let same-sex couple pay the marriage penalty.

It makes no difference what your personal opinion of same-sex marriage is - human rights are at stake. Gay individuals should be afforded the same rights as any other citizens. It becomes a government issue because of the laws regarding benefits, taxes, etc., which have nothing to do with what "the bible says."

Is a same sex love for each other different than a heterosexual love?
Do you not marry for love?
Why would anyone how is not gay even care what they do?
If we don’t protect the rights of the minority’s in the land of the free who will?

Same sex is prohibited in the eyes of God. You can not redefine marriage. Marriage is between one man and one woman only. Opposite sex marriage only. It's holy and Godly.
That same sex marriage is the devil's wicked way. Homosexuals will burn in Hell for all eternity. Heterosexuals will have everlasting life in God's kingdom of Heaven.

Since gays already have civil unions in Illinois, why do they need same-sex marriage? I saw this coming when civil unions were first proposed that gays would not be satisfied with civil unions and demand marriage. Now they have.
Why is it that such a small percentage of the population is being catered to and given special privileges and rights?

Special priveleges and rights? They are American citizens. Are not all Americans equal or are you one of those that believe some are more equal than others?

I think you mean to ask "Why is it that such a small percentage of the population is being discriminated against and denied the privileges and rights of everyone else?"

Per the Cardinal. Same sex marriage not good. Same sex blowing of underage alter-boy is acceptable. (as long as no marriage)

To Vanessa on 1/4/13 all Faiths do agree. The groups you mention have decided to leave Christ crucified & dead on the cross instead of realizing they need to be liberated from sin.
